Cleanse, Restore & Revive

Complete Cleanse is a great antidote for the excesses of winter

Spring has sprung, it’s time to shed your winter coat of hibernation and prepare for summer.

As a practicing nutritional therapist, I am regularly asked about whether a spring cleanse or detox is warranted or even necessary. My short answer to anyone over 25 is yes.  Seasonal cleansing is a fantastic way to rid accumulated toxins, improve pathways of elimination and detoxification, heighten the energy levels and even shed a few kilos.  There are so many biochemical and biological reasons why a cleansing programme can be beneficial and regardless of how conscientious we are about our health and fitness, our bodies are constantly bombarded by environmental and lifestyle factors that can sap energy.  Our bodies are designed to efficiently eliminate biological and chemical toxins with the liver, kidneys, bowel, lymphatic system, lungs and skin all working really hard to remove so called toxins. But the sheer volume of modern day exposure to bio-accumulative factors like sugar, caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, artificial additives & colourants, preservatives, organophosphate based pesticides, parabens, petro-chemicals, air borne pollutants and endocrine disrupters can promote an immune system based inflammatory response caused by toxin overload.

Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that may interfere with the body’s endocrine system (hormone secreting glands) and produce adverse developmental, reproductive, neurological, and immune effects in humans and animals. A wide range of substances, natural and man-made cause this disruption, including pharmaceuticals, dioxins, poly-chlorinated biphenyls, DDT and other pesticides, and plasticizers such as bisphenol A. Endocrine disruptors are found in many everyday products– including plastic bottles, metal food cans, detergents, flame retardants, food, toys, cosmetics, pesticides and their residue on foods.

Chemical exposures are so significant to health and wellbeing, especially when they occur daily for a lifetime.  Exposure to these health disrupting chemicals begins with the air we breathe and extends to the food we eat and the things we put on our skin. With the average person being exposed to 20+ different pesticides from the food we eat, it’s no wonder that optimal health is harder and harder to achieve as we age.  It’s also important to remember that your skin is the largest, and most permeable organ. Just about anything you put on your skin will end up in your bloodstream and distributed throughout your body. Recent studies highlight that the average western woman uses 12 different personal care products and/or cosmetics a day, containing 168 different chemicals, according to the Environmental Working Group (EWG). Whilst men use fewer products, they’re still exposed to about 85 such chemicals daily, while teens, who use an average of 17 personal care products a day, are exposed to even more.  Once these chemicals find their way into the body, they can accumulate over time (bio-accumulative), promoting inflammation pathways, compromise the immune system, tax detoxification organs and can, in significant levels have a “cocktail effect” to remove optimal health from the equation.

Put simply… the human body is amazing, it can take years and years of total neglect or even abuse before optimal health seems like a vague memory and degenerative health issues arise.  Common signs and symptoms that your body is overwhelmed by toxins include feeling tired upon waking, foggy brain, fatigue, loss of appetite, indigestion, wind, reflux, diarrhoea, constipation or irritable bowel syndrome or disease (IBS and IBD) adult acne, eczema, feeling puffy, joint stiffness, night sweats, insomnia, dark coloured urine, weight gain, high blood pressure, slow wound healing, new intolerances and allergies, altered moods, depression and more.

Full Definition of toxin (merriam-webster dictionary)
1. A poisonous substance that is a specific product of the metabolic activities of a living organism and is usually very unstable, notably toxic when introduced into the tissues, and typically capable of inducing antibody formation

If you are experiencing any or multiple of the above I wholly recommend picking and committing to a week on your calendar where there are no weddings, parties or reasons for indulgence to begin your seven day spring cleanse programme.  Of course it’s best to maintain an organic healthy diet and avoid toxins as much as possible to lessen inflammatory responses caused by their exposure, but if you’re looking for a jump start into Spring, try O2B’s Complete Cleanse liquid herbal which has been professionally formulated to assist cellular function, detoxification and elimination pathways.  Containing sixteen powerful herbs that work in synergy together to achieve excellent results: glowing skin, better digestion, increased energy levels and a better night’s sleep.  Complete Cleanse readily supports and improves lymphatic circulation, skin health, the liver detoxification pathways, kidneys filtration and elimination, respiration and lung health, digestive tract secretions and bowel functions.  This holistic herbal liquid is perfect for people who want to recharge their immune system, boost metabolism and lessen the signs and symptoms of an overburdened body.  Complete Cleanse taken in conjunction with clean eating or an anti-inflammatory diet will remove all major dietary burdens that will benefit, enhance, nourish and improve the elimination and detoxification organs efficiency. If you want to fast track your health, nourish yourself, give your body a break, or just want to try eating clean for a short time, follow this safe and do-able diet as a seven-day program.

Please note: Cleansing programmes are intended for short-term use only. Please consult your health practitioner before changing your diet or health program, particularly if you have a pre-existing health condition.  Some people may experience a ‘cleansing’ reaction in the first few days of a cleansing programme, including headaches or loose bowel movements. This is due to the sudden withdrawal of some foods, in addition to stimulation of elimination and detoxifying of organs. These symptoms usually subside in 24 to 48 hours.

The foundation of having an anti-inflammatory diet or clean eating is choosing whole foods and removing processed and refined foods.  Eating clean follows the concept that eating quality, organic, free range, unrefined whole foods and rehydrating with plenty of water and herbal teas for a set period of time helps to unburden the body. Often cleansing can result in quick weight loss and increased energy.

Those who normally eat an unhealthy diet will naturally feel better when they start eating properly. Most people don’t drink enough water or eat enough fresh fruit and vegetables anyway, so simple changes such as boosting hydration and eliminating processed foods will lead to an increased sense of wellbeing.
