Recognising World Arthritis Day

Arthritis day picThe theme of this year’s World Arthritis Day is “The Future in Your Hands” which is to highlight that even with a diagnosis of one of the 140 different types of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs) life can still be lived to the fullest.   2016 World Arthritis Day supports those diagnosed with RMDs to take control of life and maintain an encouraging attitude with self-management being key.  With no cure for these diseases, diagnosis is just the beginning of life with a RMD (Arthritis NZ, 2016).

Here at O2B Healthy we support this pro-active approach to living with any RMD diagnosis and know that a positive outlook, diet, lifestyle and natural health choices can have a hugely beneficial effect on those of us living with chronic inflammation and poor mobility.  That’s why for the month of October we will donate $1.00 to Arthritis NZ for every bottle of our new joint formula, O2B Joint Ultra+.

Arthritis and RMDs are the single greatest cause of disability in New Zealand with more than half a million people being affected by arthritis during their lifetime, with the most common diagnosed conditions being osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis (Arthritis NZ, 2016).

Osteoarthritis causes damage to the cartilage (the smooth, protective, gristle-like substance that lines the bones and allows the joints to move easily) and underlying bone.  When cartilage deteriorates, the bone underneath thickens and bones in the affected joint rub together, causing pain, inflammation and the development of knobbly-looking bony growths, called osteophytes around the edge of the joints.  At the same time, the joint lining, which is usually as thin as cling film becomes much thicker and inflamed, and the amount of lubricating synovial fluid can increase, decrease or become less dense making the joint painful, swollen and stiff to move.

Rheumatoid arthritis is less commonly diagnosed compared to osteoarthritis here in NZ, but we have a higher than usual prevalence than most of the world. As an autoimmune disease where the bodies immune system attacks its own tissue it is a chronic progressive disease causing inflammation in the synovium that surround the joints and resulting in painful deformity and immobility, especially in the fingers, wrists, feet, and ankles. It is a complex condition that can also cause problems in other parts of your body including the skin, eyes, lungs, heart and blood vessels.  Typically it affects the joint lining, causing a painful swelling that can eventually result in cartilage and bone erosion and joint deformity.

There are many things that influence the development of RMDs including genetic and environmental factors, including metabolic activities, body weight, age, lifestyle choices, allergies, diet and nutritional deficiencies can all play a role in developing RMDs.  As a Nutritional Therapist I fervently believe that given the right ingredients the body is always trying to maintain homeostasis, heal itself and control inflammatory responses.  So supplementing a good diet with nutrient dense natural compounds is an awesome way to help tackle many of the symptoms of RMDs and help maintain joint health.

So it’s with great pleasure that I am able to introduce the newest joint supplement formulation in the O2B Healthy range. O2B Joint Ultra+ is an advanced one-a-day capsule that will promote joint health and ease mobility. It is formulated with powerful therapeutic ingredients and co-factors: Glucosamine, Chondroitin, Marine Collagen, Hyaluronic Acid, Bio-Curcumin BCM-95 (Turmeric) plus BosPure (Boswellia), Black Pepper (Piper Nigrum) and Ginger root extract.  Every day in our O2B Wakatu shop I talk with lots of people who want a fast acting joint health formula, because frankly living in pain with high levels of inflammation is no fun.  Yes, Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulphate  work but sadly it can take some weeks to feel the benefits as they are what is termed ‘bio-accumulative’.  So the nutritional biochemists and natural health experts here at O2B have put this next generation for joint health formula together.

Combining tried and tested ingredients like glucosamine and chondroitin, with building blocks for joint repair and denser synovial fluid such as Marine Collagen and Hyaluronic Acid plus fast acting anti-inflammatory potent extracts of Turmeric and Boswellia.  If these fantastic ingredients weren’t enough we’ve added Ginger Root extract and Black Pepper (Piper Nigrum) to promote the circulation and synergistic uptake of all the other components.  All together they produce a fast acting and effective joint health formula for all ages and joint conditions including Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis and joint injuries.

Glucosamine

Glucosamine allows cartilage to absorb water which keeps your joints lubricated and free moving.  As we age, production of synovial fluid and cartilage can slow down, or be hindered by injury (e.g. Osteoarthritis) or auto-immune conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis.  By supplementing the key ingredients used by the body to manufacture synovial fluid and maintain cartilage it has been shown to help promote repair and growth plus reduce further damage to existing cartilage.

Collagen

Collagen is the main structural protein found in connective tissue including cartilage, tendons, ligaments, skin, bone, teeth and more.  Typically making up 25-35% of all the whole-body protein content, Collagen is required for connective tissue renewal, however synthesis declines naturally as we age.   Supplementation provides regenerative nutrients for repair and renewal that increases cellular integrity, maintains resistance, elasticity and mobility of connective tissue and joints.

Chondroitin

Chondroitin Sulphate is a sulfated glycosaminoglycan (GAG) composed of a chain of alternating sugars and is a key component of human connective tissues found in cartilage and bone, it assists in providing cartilage with texture, elasticity and absorbing moisture into the connective tissue which helps to keep joints spongy and healthy.  Taken as a supplement it has been proven to reduce pain and inflammation, improve joint function and slow the progression of osteoarthritis and may reverse cartilage loss when used in conjunction with Glucosamine Sulphate.

Turmeric

Turmeric has a vast history in Eastern medicine and cuisine, related to ginger it has a vibrant and brilliantly coloured root or rhizome.  Bio-Curcumin is the “next generation” in delivery of turmeric compounds that is clinically standardized and does not require high doses to reach sustainable levels. Packed full of powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds that are found only in Turmeric called curcuminoids.  Over 4000 published research papers confirm that curcuminoids act on multiple targets and at multiple levels in the human body. From protecting our delicate DNA from free radical damage to modulating the inflammatory responses including cytokines, chemokines, adhesion molecules, growth factors and transcription factors.  Bio-Curcumin BCM-95 is recommended for its ability to lower auto-immune responses in Rheumatoid Arthritis and diminishing inflammation in Osteoarthritis and promoting injury repair.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid is scientifically termed as an anionic, non-sulfated glycosaminoglycan (GAG) that is distributed widely throughout connective, epithelial, and neural tissue. This gel-like water holding molecule is found throughout the body and acts as a space filler and cellular cushioning agent that is readily found in joints and nerves, it hydrates the skin and fills the eye.   Supplementation with this highly absorbable GAG helps to act as an internal moisturizer and joint shock absorber that nourishes and builds stronger, healthier and flexible joints and rejuvenates connective tissue.

Boswellia Serata (BosPure)

Boswellia Serata is the plant that produces Indian Frankincense and has long been favoured as a powerful anti-inflammatory.  BosPure is a standardized isolate extract of Indian Frankincense that is highly absorbable and utilised that contains the 3 key health promoting biologically active Boswellic acids: Acetyle-a-Boswellic Acid, Acetyl-B-Boswellic Acid and enriched levels of Acetyle-11-keto-B-Boswellic Acid (AKBA).  These Boswellic acids have far reaching anti-inflammatory properties to reduce the limitations of stiff joints found in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis compared to standard Boswellia extractions.  Used to reduce the pain and support the body’s natural process of joint tissue restoration and repair.

Ginger root

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) root is closely related to Turmeric and Cardamom and has long been valued in Eastern medicine and cuisine.  The dried or fresh root of the ginger plant has over 5,000 year history of proven therapeutic effects on inflammation and in increasing circulation.  The main biologically active ingredient is gingerol, a unique and powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compound that helps decreases joint pain and reduces inflammation in those with osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis and increases overall circulation and is particularly beneficial for those with Raynaud’s phenomenon.

Piper Nigrum

Piper Nigrum is native to south Indian and is commonly known as Black pepper, this flowering vine has been cultivated since 2000BC for its fruits that are dried and used as a spice and seasoning.  Nutrient dense and containing biological active components like Piperdines and Capsaicin that have powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity.  As Piper Nigrum has mild analgesic properties it has long been used to reduce joint and muscular pain.  Piper Nigrum possesses a synergistic ability to stimulate digestive secretions and processes to enhance absorption of all other ingredients consumed with it.

O2B Joint Ultra+ supports mobility while reducing stiffness and assists with the healing of bone and joint injuries promoting repair and healing of both cartilage, ligaments and tendons.
