Eyebright (Euphrasia officinialis) has been prescribed by medicinal herbalists since the 14th century to treat conditions of the eye and inflammatory conditions. With cosmopolitan distribution the leaf, steam and flowers of Eyebright has astringent compounds known as tannins and lignans which work to tighten the top layers of the mucus membranes, reducing mucus secretion, which in turn reduces irritation. It also has anti-inflammatory components including iridoid glycosides and flavonoid antioxidants quercetin and aucubin that actively protect the iris and the overall health of the eye. In particular the iridoid glycosides may help to prevent macular degeneration by supporting the circular patch of yellow pigmented tissues called the macula lutea.  Eyebright is often prescribed where there is watery nasal discharge, as seen in rhinitis, colds and flu’s. With high levels of anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties, Eyebright boosts the immune responses of the body to actively fight infections and help any eye infections such as conjunctivitis and pink eye.

Licorice or Liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is native to Southern Europe and parts of Asia and is a member of the pea family that has a vast tap root that is used in herbal medicine. Medicinal use of this root in both Eastern and Western cultures dates back thousands of years. Traditionally prescribed for coughs, sore throats, food poisoning, digestive disturbances, insomnia and lung health issues. This potent anti-inflammatory herb is soothing and softens mucus membranes of the body including sinus cavities, throat, lungs, digestive tract which promotes cleansing of inflamed tissues. Licorice root possesses antioxidant, anti-arthritic, anti-spasmodic, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, expectorant, immune-stimulant and adaptogenic properties.  Containing isoflavones, coumarins, asparagin, sterols, polysaccharides, glycyrrhizin and is also a rich source of iron, chromium, cobalt, magnesium and Vitamin B3. Licorice is a significant tool against allergies and autoimmune conditions due to its phyto-steroidal content that counteracts or mimics the adrenal hormones cortisol and aldosterone whose main functions are to down regulate allergic and immune responses, form antibodies, nourish the adrenal glands, regulate blood pressure, the sodium and potassium levels in the body and promote water reabsorption. Providing significant relief from fatigue, fibromyalgia, viral infections, PMS and adrenal dysfunction Licorice has many strings to its bow. Do not take if hypertensive (high blood pressure), have chronic liver disease, chronic kidney disease or have arrhythmia (irregular heart beat).

Burdock is native to Northern Europe and Siberia and traditionally considered one of the most potent blood purifying herbs, Burdock (Arctium lappa) has been prescribed for conditions such as eczema, fevers, gout and diabetes. Most of this biennial plant can be used in herbal medicine including the seeds, leaves and root. Burdock contains many bio-active compounds including alkaloids, tannins, phyto-sterols, caffeic acid derivatives and good levels of minerals including zinc, potassium, silica, chromium, iron, cobalt, magnesium and phosphorus. A great source of Vitamin A, B1, and inulin to help regulate metabolism and blood sugar levels. Burdock has potent antibacterial and antifungal activity to support the immune system and contains bitter compounds that offer mild laxative and diuretic effects that also stimulate bile production, gastric secretions which helps to support and restore efficient liver and gallbladder function.

Fenugreek was used by ancient Greeks and Romans for a wide range of medicinal and culinary purposes Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) has been cultivated since pre-history and seeds were found in Tutankhamun’s tomb. Thought to be native to the Near East Fenugreek leaves and seeds have powerful anti-inflammatory abilities and helps to soothe inflamed tissues. The biological components found in Fenugreek include steroidal sapinogens, beta-carotene, amino acids (histidine, lysine and arginine) flavonoids, folic acid, calcium, selenium, zinc, magnesium, B vitamins and high levels of iron. All these biologically active compounds helps regulate hormone levels, reduce swellings and inflammation and redress anaemia. Fenugreek has a wide array of uses in herbal medicine as it acts as an antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and is an expectorant to expel toxins and mucous through the lymphatic system and bronchial passages. Alleviates hormonal imbalances including thyroid dysfunction, hot flashes, regulates periods, improves libido, reduces anxiety and aids mood regulation. Not to be taken in pregnancy, or those taking diabetic medication, blood thinning drugs or MAO inhibitors for depression.

Kumarahou (Pomaderris Kumarahou) is a NZ native that grows in the more temperate north and has bright yellow flowers in spring. The leaves and flowers were used by Maori and early settlers as a blood purifier, it was taken for lung and kidney conditions, stimulating milk flow and skin rashes. Possessing anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and expectorant properties, containing antioxidants including Quercetin and Kaempferol and saponins which help to eliminate excess mucous, toxins and fight infections. As a general lung tonic, with restorative nervine action, Kumarahou offers a cooling and relaxing effect to bronchial tissues. Modern herbalists prescribed Kumarahou for bronchial congestion, bronchitis, asthma, colds and flu and tuberculosis. Do not take during pregnancy.

Nettle is Native to western North America, Europe, Asia and northern Africa, common Nettles (Urtica dioca) or Stinging Nettle have been prescribed in herbal medicine for thousands of years. Remedies from the root and leaves were traditionally prescribed for wound healing, persistent coughs, arthritis, nosebleeds, heavy periods, urinary tract and kidney problems and gout. Nettles have astringent, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, anti-allergenic, circulatory stimulant and galactogogue properties. Packed full of phyto and essential nutrients including amines, formic acid, serotonin, gluco-quinones, sterols, phenols, tannins, mucilage, nitrates, flavonoids volatile oils, 5-HTP and vitamins A, B, C, K and minerals iron, calcium, chromium, magnesium, potassium and zinc. Modern herbalists commonly prescribed nettle for topical application for urticaria, eczema and inflamed skin conditions, and for internal use for prostate hyperplasia, kidney dysfunction, allergies, joint and muscle pain, promoting milk production, depression, arthritic conditions and anemia. Do not use in pregnancy.

Apis mellifica is prepared from the Western or European honey bee. It is one of the most commonly used Homeopathic remedies, treating complaints as diverse as allergies and scarlet fever. When the remedy match the symptoms, Apis is prescribed to treat conditions such as allergies, arthritis, ascites, asthma, infected wounds, headache and migraines.

Allium Cepa or Red Onion is part of the genus of monocotyledonous flowering plants that includes the cultivated onion, garlic, scallion, shallot and leek as well as chives and hundreds of other wild species. Allium species occur in temperate climates of the Northern Hemisphere, except for a few species occurring in Chile, Brazil and tropical Africa. Traditionally prescribed for the symptomatic relief of hay fever and colds. Prescribed for symptoms that feel like the persons has been peeling onions, with streaming red eyes, profuse clear nasal discharge, frequent sneezing and red rawness around the nostrils and upper lip. Allium also suits sore or horse throats, hacking coughs, and congested headaches, with characteristic symptoms of starting on the left-side, acrid and watery discharge, worse at evening and a warm stuffy room.

Pulsatilla Nigricans is a herbaceous perennial with dark purple flowers, native to meadows and prairies of North America, Europe, and Asia. Common names include pasque-flower, windflower, prairie crocus and meadow anemone. Commonly prescribed in Homeopathy for conditions such as colds, dry evening coughs, productive morning cough and insomnia.

Rhus Tox (plant) is produced from Toxicodendron radicans which is commonly known as eastern poison ivy. Poison Ivy is a poisonous Asian and North American flowering shrub or woody vine. Commonly prescribed for red itchy eyes and skin.

Luffa is used for common cold, hay fever, rhinitis and catarrhs of all kinds, purgative action. It inhibits inflammation in the nose, decreases inflammation of lymphatic nodes and tonsils, and also stimulates secretion of mucous, facilitates expectoration and inhibits inflammatory processes. In upper respiratory tract inflammation of an allergic origin, it works to decrease the inflammation of the mucous membranes (of the lungs, bronchi, and sinuses).
