Cranberries are a rich source of phenolic compounds, including flavanols, A-type Proanthocyanidins (PACs), anthocyanins, benzoic acid, hippuric acid and ursolic acid and a unique profile of all 6 members of the anthocyanidin family. PACs are what provide cranberries with their intense colour and are a class of flavonoids that are somewhat unique to cranberries. PACs exert powerful antioxidant activity and provide anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-adhesive properties that help promote urinary tract, gastrointestinal and oral health. This vast array of biologically activity helps protect the urinary tract from infection, support cardiovascular and periodontal health. It is due to these compounds that Cranberries have powerful antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities in the body. Studies highlight that cranberries can be useful in treating kidney stones and helicobacter pylori infections too. Further clinical and animal studies suggest that supplementation with cranberry extract reduces oxidative stress markers and help normalize triglycerides levels. Cranberries are the only fruit in the world to receive a government sanctioned health claim (AFSSA 2004) due to this anti-adhesion ability and its benefit in treating UTI. There are so many clinical studies to support the use of cranberry preparations to treat and prevent UTI and bladder infections. Further studies highlight that cranberries exert a preventative effect and are a helpful tool in treating kidney stones and helicobacter pylori infections. Exciting small clinical and animal studies suggest that supplementation with Cranberry reduces oxidative stress markers, lower LDL cholesterol and increase HDL profiles, and reduce the risk in inflammatory diseases like atherosclerosis.

Uva Ursi

Arctostaphylos Uva Ursi is also known as Upland Cranberry in its native North American, it has a long history of medicinal use with the first nation’s people for treating headaches, curing scurvy and diarrhoea. It has mild diuretic, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-tussive and astringent properties in the body and has long been used to treat urinary tract and kidney infections. Many biologically active compounds are found in the leaves of the Uva Ursi plant, including the tannins ellagic and gallic acid, the flavonoids hyperoside, myricetin, quercetin, and glycosides such as hyperin, myricitrin, isoquercitrin, and quercitrin, triterpenes and phenol-carboxylic acids, resin, volatile oil and wax. Uva Ursi also contains a hydroquinone derivative Arbutin that can help to reduce accumulations of uric acid and relieve the pain of kidney stones. Uva Ursi soothes, strengthens, and tightens irritated and inflamed tissues.

Native to South Africa, Buchu (Agathosma betulina) leaves have a long history in the treatment of UT health and were introduced to Dutch settlers as a remedy for bladder and kidney back in the 1600’s. Listed in 1821 in the British Pharmacopoeia as a medicine for cystitis, urethritis, nephritis and catarrh of the bladder. A natural diuretic that possesses anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and antioxidant properties, Buchu contains vast array of biologically active compounds including monoterpenes, volatile oils limonene, menthone and soothing mucilages diosphenol and large amounts of l-pulegone.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C has multiple activities in the body to support the immune system, firstly it is antimicrobial, and increasing the cellular mediated response of immune cells like natural killer cells, leukocytes and others. Through this role Vitamin C boosts resistance to many microbes and helps reduces severity and length of any infection.
