Vitex or Chaste berry (Vitex Agnus-Castus) native to the Mediterranean and part of the grape family, Vitex has been used for thousands of years for its medicinal properties. Active constituents of these dark red berries include iridoid glycosides, flavonoids, volatile oils, agnuside and monoterpenoids that appear to act directly on the pituitary gland to help regulate and normalize hormones levels. Possessing expectorant, prosterogenic, and galactogogue properties, Vitex is commonly prescribed to treat female health concerns, including to increase breast milk production, for female hormone imbalance as seen with PMS, dysmenorrhea, heavy periods, infertility, tender breasts, fibroids, acne and endometriosis and is prescribed for men who have low testosterone levels or androgen levels. Vitex appears to help regulate the neurotransmitter dopamine which improves mood, attention, acts as a vasodilator, is key to motor control and plays a role in the reward centres of the brain. Do not use during pregnancy. Do not take if you have thyroid disease. Contraindicated if taking prescribed hormone based medication (e.g. Thyroxine) or dopamine-receptor antagonist medication.

Native to parts of Europe and the middle East, Oats (Avena sativa) are cultivated worldwide for the culinary uses of its seeds that are also used in herbal medicine to nourish the body. Oats have emollient, antidepressant and nutritive properties that calm the central nervous system and relieve anxiety, elevate mood and help stabilize stress hormone production. Containing a number of important minerals including calcium, iron and magnesium, lipids, β-glucan and phyto-constituents like avenan-thramides, an indole alkaloid-gramine, flavonoids, tri-terpenoid saponins, sterols, silicic acid and B vitamins. Commonly prescribed by modern herbalists to nourish the central nervous system in times of depression, stress and exhaustion, to lower cholesterol levels, insomnia, kidney disease, bladder weakness and gout. Oats are also used for its antispasmodic, diuretic, and neuro-tonic benefits. Oat are anti-inflammatory, promote wound healing and regulate blood sugar levels.

A member of the buttercup family and native to eastern North America, the root and rhizomes of Black Cohosh (Cimicifuca racemose) is classed as a bitter and calmative medicinal herb. Black Cohosh has a long history of use by the indigenous people of North America to help regulate hormones and combat depression. Not vastly investigated by modern science, empirical evidence suggests that Black Cohosh has significant biological effects on steroid hormones, neurotransmitters and vascular activity via its influence on Nitric Oxide production. Black Cohosh is affective in mood regulation as it readily crosses the blood brain barrier and helps to regulate serotonin and its precursors. Traditionally prescribed to alleviate PMS and peri-menopause and menopause symptoms. Known primarily as a ‘woman’s’ herb as it has powerful phyto-active compounds that have a special affinity for the endometrium, ovaries and breasts. The biologically active constituent is a terpene glycoside fraction, including actein and cimifugoside, several alkaloids, flavonoids and tannins which act to regulate genito-urinary and cardiovascular systems. Shown to help with hot flashes, sweating, headaches, ringing in the ears, vaginal dryness, depression, low libido and helps to boost bone density. Not to be taken in pregnancy or by those with heart disease.

Part of the thistle family and native to the Mediterranean region, Globe Artichoke (Cynara scolymus) has been cultivated for its culinary and medicinal values since Greek and Roman times. The root/rhizome, leaves and flower head are all used in herbal medicine as they possess a large amount of biologically active compounds including cynarin, inulin, sesquiterpene lactone, caffeic and cholorogenic acids, flavonoids, amino acids, calcium, potassium, folic acid, B vitamins and carotenoids. Classed as hepato-protective, Cynarin offers fantastic support for the liver by boosting its detoxification pathways, increasing the production of and flow of bile and inhibits cholesterol synthesis. Inulin has been shown to support pancreatic function and readily lowers blood sugar levels. Prescribed by herbalists for gall stones, digestive disturbances, nausea, lowering cholesterol levels, boosting fat metabolism and hormone imbalance. As a gentle diuretic Globe artichoke supports kidney function. Seek advice from your health care provider prior to use if you have a bile duct blockage.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) originated in the rainforests of Southern Asia and has been cultivated for thousands of years for its culinary and medicinal uses. Ginger root has a vast array of proven medicinal applications as it has anti-nausea, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, analgesic, expectorant, hypotensive, circulatory stimulant and antispasmodic properties. Used medicinally for over 3,000 years, Ginger root is rich in antioxidants and volatile oils, B Vitamins, Vitamins A and C, essential fatty acids, amino acids, beta-carotene and is a vast source of minerals including iron, potassium, magnesium, selenium, zinc and phosphorus. Long been prescribed for asthma, bronchitis, headaches and migraines, colds and flus, arthritic conditions, kidney stones, depression, tendinitis, digestive disorders, supporting the cardiovascular system and improving blood circulation. Traditionally considered a warming herb, and is prescribed by medicinal herbalists for any ‘cold’ disorder as it helps to increase circulation as it helps to gently thin the blood. Ginger stimulates the production of saliva, aids digestion, helping with the elimination of gas and bloating and increases the motility of the gastrointestinal tract and is readily used to combat nausea in pregnancy and motion sickness. Not recommended for those with peptic ulcers.

Vitamin B6 or Pyridoxine is involved in more processes in the body than any other vitamin. Used to treat depression, postpartum depression, eczema, carpal tunnel syndrome and asthma. It is needed to make red blood cells and to boost immunity. A B6 deficiency is rare, but insufficient levels present as mood disorders, insomnia, irritability, confusion, depression, cracks around the corners of the mouth and/or dry scaly skin around the nose, eyes, eyebrows, and skin behind the ears.

Chromium is trace mineral that is a co-factor in glucose tolerance factor (GTF) which has the main function in the body to work with insulin in metabolizing carbohydrates, fats and proteins and energy production at a cellular level. Key to helping blood sugar management which in turn can help regulate mood and energy levels.
