Be in Top Shape this Summer

Be in Top Shape this Summer (and always!)

When it comes to new year’s resolutions, it’s no surprise that losing weight is near the top of a lot of lists. Like many Western countries, New Zealand has an obesity problem, with nearly a third of adults being dangerously overweight according to the New Zealand Health Survey.

Perhaps then, this act of making new year’s resolutions (especially relating to weight loss) needs to change? So that we can focus on getting healthier and feeling better all of the time! Losing weight can be just one result of positive lifestyle changes, but there is no magic pill anywhere to do it for you sadly. Read through our tips below for some support on your journey, whether it’s for New Year’s. the summer or forever.

Cut the (refined) carbs

With diet, there is a lot of information out there and not a lot of consensus. Some people say that carbohydrates are best avoided, while others say its saturated fats. When it comes down to it, it all depends on quality, how much you eat, how well your hormones are managed and how much energy you use. The reason for all the advice around cutting carbs is mostly because it reduces your appetite, helping you not to overeat. Without excess fuel, your body starts burning excess fat for energy – after all, fat is just the way your body stores energy long-term. Broccoli, tomatoes, cabbage and cauliflower are all low in carbohydrates but high in nutrition, so be sure to cook up plenty of them.

Up the protein – big time

In a very tasty form of subtraction by addition, you can help your weight loss program by switching to a high-protein diet. Academic studies have shown that protein is very good at facilitating weight loss. That’s because it boosts your metabolism, meaning your burn energy faster, and reduces your appetite, stopping those late-night chocolate cravings. Healthy fats are also necessary (for hormone production, nerves, and really every cell in your body) – good quality meats, eggs, fish, unrefined oils and dairy are all good things to incorporate into your meals with plenty of colourful vegetables. If you’re having trouble figuring out how to get enough protein in your diet, try O2B Healthy’s selection of whey and plant based protein powders which easily blend into a smoothie.

Healthy movement is as good a supplement as any

Whilst you can’t exercise your way out of a poor diet, healthy movement is a key factor to optimal health and wellbeing. You may think that intense exercise three or four times a week is a good health choice, but have you considered that there is no one-size-fits-all approach, and for some (particularly if hormones are out of balance) too much intense exercise can cause you to put on weight because your body perceives it as stress?! Introducing more natural movements like walking and swimming into your routine, doing regular strength or resistance training even if it’s with body weight only, and balancing out your week with some relaxation type exercises (stretching, yoga, pilates) can ease the load on your joints, balance your hormones, keep your metabolism going and still ensure you’re burning a healthy amount of energy.

Use healthy, natural supplements appropriately

There is no substitute for a healthy diet and lifestyle, adequate hydration, time spent in nature and healthy light exposure, but many of our customers choose to support their health journeys with supplements along the way. We have many options to suit different goals, so please do come in and have a chat or give us a call to discuss. Here are a couple of favourites:

  • O2B Healthy ACV + Garcinia . Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is made from fermentation of the apple sugar into alcohol and then into acetic acid. ACV was used by the great Hippocrates, father of medicine, for its amazing health qualities. ACV supports healthy blood sugar levels and weight management, digestion and detoxification processes.
The skin of the Garnicia fruit contains a special acid called Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA) which supports the body to balance how it stores excess energy between carbohydrates and fat. Utilising more fat for energy is actually more efficient and better for the brain in the long term.
The essential trace mineral Chromium is combined with the naturally occurring metabolite Picolinate into one of the easiest and most effective forms of chromium for the body to absorb. Chromium supports the role of insulin in the body for normal blood-sugar management.
  • Our customers also love L-Carnitine to support their health and lifestyle goals. Carnitine is the nutrient in your body which transports fatty acids into mitochondria, where they are broken down.
